I am going to be turkey hunting in CT this spring for the first time. Unfortunately, I am limited to hunting on State land, no lottery. Any suggestions as to what areas might be good?

Where in CT are you DLV, I live in Lebanon and all the state land around here holds turkeys.

I live in Newtown. I've been scouting for sign at the state hunts near me (Paugussett and Trout Brook Valley), but have not seen much sign. Some of the state hunts in Litchfield - Hartford Counties look good. I have not scouted yet but am going to look into Roraback, Mattatuck and Nassahegon. They are in the right area. I'm not familiar with the state hunts out your way, how are they?

With the weather we been having the turkeys are holding tight in the woods, in a few weeks get out before daylight and head to the areas you want to hunt. Take an owl call with you and stop at a few spots and listen for awhile, if you don't hear any birds gobbling on their own give a hoot or two and listen again. You will be suprised how many turkeys we have in CT, in the last three years I've taken my three biggest birds.
