When I was a youngster in the early 50's I went turkey hunting with my cousin near Mayo FL. He was an accomplished turkey hunter and all I remember was he had me laying down and not moving. He did call in a turkey which he shot. I haven't been turkey hunting since but I have lately taken an interest as turkeys are plentiful in our area. I have a question about the call he was using. I don't remember what he used but I do remember him chalking his gunstock and rubbing something against it. Anybody have a guess about what he was using?

ya, I would think it just some sort of friction call like a scratch box just to peaces of wood you can just bye a box call and work it the same way.

Their are two possibllities really. One they could have been using a scratch box and using the gunstock as the striker. Or he could have been using the gunstock as the call and using a striker on it. I have seen this done when you take the finish off of the stock as most stocks have a hollow chamber inside and this produces a nice cluck and purrs done if the stock has chalk on it. I hope that one of us could help you out.
