I ran one at Bass Pro last year and thought it sounded OK. I am not a big fan of mass produced production calls. They all sound the same if you look at it. The old yeller sounds just like the sla-tek. To be all honest their isn't a production call on the mrket except for diaphrams that I would even consider to use. They just don't do anything for me as they all sound the same. JMO

I have heard that you should get a call made for the area that you hunt. i live in the buckeye and ive heard that the birds sound different in this region than lets say in florida for example. Is this true? i have been thinking of getting my calls specially made for this reason! would this be wise?

Is this true? i have been thinking of getting my calls specially made for this reason! would this be wise? Well for the reason stated no it wouldn't be wise as basically all turkeys bout sound the same. Cadience in the calling is more important than the sound really. But it would be wise to get a good custom made call as that way you can have the callmaker make a call that is what you want. Say you want a call a lil more raspier than others well he can make that for you. You want it to be able to be a lil louder where the call carries in the wind well he can do that to. Custom calls are the future production calls are a way of the past.

The problem is when what you hear sounds right and turns out not to be, you can call turkeys with any store bought call the good thing about a custom call is the turkeys in your area will be hearing something differant (new hen in the area so to say), if you want a custom call you can't go wrong with a Kaiser Kall (only one I have tried here) I bought two last year and liked them so much I bought two more.

I think i will give him a try. everyone here seems to like kaiser calls a bunch. i haven't seen too many hunters here from the buckeye, so it probably will be to my advantage.

I should have gave them some store bought crap and kept the secret to myself.

I know this won't be popular with the Call Makers but a Slatex won't take a back seat to the best custom made call. It isn't as pretty but it will call in a turkey as good if not better than any custom call. I have a lot of calls, custom and store bought including the custom glass friction call we had designed for our business but none of them sound any better if even as good as the Slatex, that call is the exception to store bought mass produced calls. It isn't fancy or purty but it is as good as they come. JMHO and the HO of many dead turkeys.

I will say this much about the Ole Yeller/Sla-tek type calls. I have killed turkeys with them - don't use them anymore but I have a sla-tek and wish I would have had it with me on my TX hunt last year.
My buddy had one and it's all they wanted to hear. I have several "custom" calls but when my buddy broke out his ole yellar and graphite striker - you could go on and knock your safety off. And it was'nt just the way he ran the call - I could grab it and run and and we had the same results - it was the call - pure and simple.

I have two go to slate type calls. One is a Kaiser (double sided glass/slate) and the other is the Ol Yeller. Both work well.
