Well I drove out to the spot I was going to hunt on the old river levee Monday morning at 5:00AM. The wind was blowing about 30 miles an hour and I couldn't hear a bird gobble at all. About 6:00 I started down the levee through the trees towards where I have been witching birds on the roost. About 40 yards from the tree I saw the birds roosted facing away from me and away from the wind. Their tails were blowing and it seemed as if they could barely able to stay on the roost. There is an opening on the levee below the tree about 50 yards long and the width of the levee. I got to the edge of the opening and set up so I wouldn't spook the birds off the roost. At about 6:30 the birds were gobbling and the hens were talking. The first hen pitched down to the opening and the other hens and gobblers followed. There were about 18 to 20 birds in front of me. I had to wait for the gobblers to separate and the hens to get out of the way to give me a shot. I finally got a gobbler close enough to me and separated enough to shoot. I tripped the trigger on him and to my amazement he flew. The birds all flew to the field where they usually feed and I heard a crashing in the brush on the fence line in the direction my bird had flown. I took my cane and slipped down the hill to hhe fence line and started looking for my bird. I didn't see him and I knew I had hit him hard. I crossed the fenceline to the next fielld and there he was. I got to him and found he only had half a tail. His beard was 10 inches long and his spurs were 1 inch long. I put my tag on him and got him to the road. I was really hurting from the walking but I went to my Blazer and drove to where I had laid the bird on the levee road. I gave thanks to the lord for allowing me the priveledge of taking a good bird and started home. I stopped and got him weighed and he weighed 21 pounds. Good luck and God Bless you all. Norm
